Most everything on a Nor'Sea 27 might be considered oversize by most trailerable sail boat people. But it is designed to go any place you can take a boat. All the way round if desired.
The first one most likely had a few causes of failure. I think in the area that the crack showed up had a thin line of sealant (by mistake) creep out from behind the trim wood and seal that area not allowing oxygen to get to it. Then the working loads over 24 years of sailing and trailering. Add the thermal cycling and it was just time to go.
Seem no matter how strong we think stuff is, it eventually gives out.
