I've coated my foil with automotive chassis undercoater...
In Response To: Replacing copper ground strap ()

Hi Max,

It's a bit messy to work with, 'cause it takes a while to dry, but seems to work OK. I first used it to coat my shaft coupling, which has a lot of mild steel and can be a real challenge to maintain over the years, and it worked pretty well... The downside is that it's not clear, of course, like a corrosion inhibitor such as Boeshield, but I figure as long as there's no visible corrosion at either end/connection, and the undercoater hasn't been compromised, I'm probably good to go...

when I gutted my boat way back when, I glassed in a whole lot of foil throughout in an effort to create a good counterpoise. However, before I had even completed the rebuild of the interior (granted, it was a few years) it was a bit distressing to note how much of the foil was already suffering some apparent corrosion, visible thru the fiberglass/clear epoxy mat, even encapsulated as well as it was...

So, several years ago, I decided it was worth the additional expense for me to install a ground plate as close as I could to the tuner, in an effort to keep the run of foil as short as possible, an in a spot where it could be inspected - and replaced if necessary - without too much trouble... Still, it's in the lazarette, and subject to considerable moisture, but the foil is only about 3-4 feet long, and run through a sleeve made from Stamoid fabric in an effort to keep it isolated from anything really wet...

So far, so good, seems to work pretty well...

Oh, and I should have mentioned this disclaimer at the outset... I pretty much know SQUAT about HF radio, and I'd pay much more attention to guys like Paul, and Brian, if I were you... (grin)

Good luck, and best regards,

Jon
