That said, one of the overviews early in the video suggests a range into the harbor. I don't know if there were visual range markers or if it was simply a GPS line, but you ignore those at your peril. The boat's route into the harbor as overlaid on one of the charts made it seem pretty obvious they were headed for the end of the breakwater (and onto the submerged reef). It does seem like they lost awareness of where they were and you can't afford to do that in a tricky entrance such as that one, pilot boat or no pilot boat.
I once depended on a local fisherman to lead me through the pass at Maupiti, west of Bora Bora, since I didn't have a detailed chart (I wasn't planning to stop; he came alongside and said 'no one visits us, please come in'). So I don't want to be hypocritical. The guys at Easter may have put too much trust in the pilot, and the same theoretically could have happened to me.
