I apologize and readily admit I have a TERRIBLE head for remembering names, whether they be people or place names. You said Maupiti and the image that popped into my head was that of Mopelia (also called Maupihaa).
We were there in 2011, less than 2 years ago and it had pretty much recovered. Lots of palm trunks laying on the bottom of the lagoon though. The population was about the same, two families living about as fa apart from each other as they could (I was told by another cruiser that there was bad blood between them). Fantastic scuba diving outside the pass. Some of the best we saw anywhere. Also, lots of sharks hanging out in the pass.
