That description reminds me of Mopelia

Hi Dan, from Maupiti we sailed overnight to Mopelia (also called Maupiha as I recall, this was 31 years ago). The current boils out Mopelia from the tradewinds sloshing over the low reefs on the windward side of the island. The pass was long and very narrow, with a coral head to dodge part way through. Once inside it was like being on Gilligan's island, very remote, seldom visited, 11 Polynesians living there. There was a beach about 2 miles long, indescribably beautiful, and absolutley deserted.

I believe the Island got hit by a serious hurricane some time ago, wonder how it 's recovered.
