He said the initial problem started when the boat hit something, keel first, and then rudder. That's the original rudder that was well built at the factory. The collision destroyed it, eventually.
From then on, it's been rebuilt by whatever welders etc. were available on the other side of the Atlantic.
It doesn't sound like the owner is very experienced in general boat work. And rudder design and building takes some experience all around to do well, the people that did the repairs, didn't have that by the sounds of things. I see this as a pretty easy scenario though, that could happen to many people.
Initially, I thought they aquired a new rudder designed and built for the boat. That made me think it was under-designed. That wasn't the case, it was poorly built/rebuilt.
