That may sound trite, but I've owned 2 cb'ers. There's no getting around the added complications in a centerboard arrangement. And it's expensive to build one well so I think it's an area that can be skimped on by the builder.
I think they're still the best compromise if shoal draft is the objective. I'm on a 10 year pennant replacement schedule and the last one looked like new. Plus I changed out the pivot pin a couple years ago, and that looked like new. But I don't mind, the idea of any sort of failure from the centerboard is too nasty to risk.
