Just don't run agound while backing with board down

Most trunks/pins aren't designed to handle a reversed impact.

keel/centerboard?
No expert, but ...
It depends on the boat and the conditions.
Unlike a daggerboard on a dinghy, it's not an all or nothing thing with a keel/centerboard.
Interesting analogy. But what he said.
I forget the boatyard advantage.
A keel/centerboard sailboat is the perfect design.
a differenht perspective
I think on mechanical, just like a rudder, you should build a centerboard like you mean it.
to nasty to risk?
That was dire, sorry. On my boat, the 300lb plus bronze board would just stay down.

Nice boat. I found this drawing on line.
Our CB Tartan 40 ...
Another photo ...
Nice write up, John. On our Tartan 37

Just don't run agound while backing with board down
If my boat went 10 feet straight backwards, it will be a first.
Have to start every season backing the length of the Mattapoisett town ramp.
Interesting Tom ... I read that somewhere a week or so ago ...
Will have to try that as well. Gene Barnes said, don't use it as a depth sounder.
That's the problem....never seems to be enough depth were you need good reverse control so the board has to stay up
That's an interesting read, thanks John.
Thanks Tom, good suggestion ...
You're right about fin and foil hype
In that context, 60 feet/hr is important.
Tom, in displacement monohulls you're right
Maybe not in the boats we sail
Not just comfort and cost
Not a big thing
