But almost nothing scares me more than finding myself off the coast of Maine without a way of determining my location or a way to navigate to safety. I'm a former US Navy navigator (ok... we actually USED celestial nav in the Pacific!) and love all of the new tech. The better it is the tighter I cling to my hand bearing compass and laminated chart book. Launching a Cape Dory 22 soon in Casco Bay and looking forward to sailing the coast further east. And as wonderful as the chart plotter and GPS are, I will try to train regulars on the boat to rely on a chart, maintaining situational awareness, and a magnetic compass. And check the result with the tech stuff. With one 12v lead acid battery on board, I just know I'll run out of juice about the time I really need it.
Wondering whether there are other "old fashioned" types who would share how they pilot using low tech tools.....
This must be spring.... the cash is starting to flow.... out....
