Sounds like you're using them. Truth is, I haven't penciled a bearing, drawn a course/speed line, in years.

Even though I carry all the charts between Canada and NYC on board. Some are old enough that my old course lines from Loran fixes are still there. They became back-up for navigation a decade ago and were used solely for planning.

Now going to a larger format electronic cartography for route planning on board, and redundant gps navigation, my charts are not likely to get pulled out at all on our boat. I coastal sail where the electronic charts are accurate beyond belief, way beyond my skills to fix my location pre gps.

This is reminiscent to me of going from vellum, pencils and drawing table to my first CAD program for building design a couple decades ago. I kept the table for 10 years, but I never put pencil to vellum again. I finally threw the drawing table away.
