I wonder if Garmins apps are making up for the likely(?) decline in their hardware sales.

I just talked to a good friend that upgraded his radar, and will go without an onboard Chartplotter. He's been using an ipad(and CP) to navigate for a few years now. He's gone to an ipad mini now, 3 charting apps and other stuff I don't quite follow.
He has pilot house motorsailer, I couldn't see going without a CP near my helm(and somewhat exposed).

He'll use the ipad mini for all his navigation and his iphone for backup. Like me, he said his charts are growing mold in a locker, for back-up, back-up.

He's no newbie, he wrote the book, Getting your Captains license. Last I knew, the CG recommends you read his book before taking the test.
