() and my buddies that just did the transpac gave me plenty of reason to stick to paper... Electronics devices on boats die regularly.
While I am a high tech dude and fully groc all this, I have to admit that my love of boats and bikes hinges on the fact that I seek to escape the high tech world when I go to these old forms of transport.
The crew that I regularly race with, who did the transpac, lost both computers within the first week. The lost all power about 3 days before arriving at Honolulu. They still had hand held devices... and paper charts. They turned on GPS sparingly and did DR for the last couple of days.
"Stuff happens" folks, and at times, KISS is the best backup.
