It becomes apparent

when you have radar overlay on charts, and the reflections don't line up with charted buoy positions... Then you update your charts and they do.

I admit things tend to be pretty stable in most parts of New England, but I have noticed such changes and I like the idea of having updated charts and related info such as ActiveCaptain notations when I go places I don't know well. Especially year-to-year changes due to winter storms, Northeasters or big events like Hurricane Sandy etc.

You also become more aware of just how many changes if you update your paper charts based on notices to mariners. Of course, few people did that in the past and even fewer would do that now. But NOAA does keep track of chart changes for us and it's easy for me to download updates by region using Skipper or Active Captain.
