I have a nice little chart plotter on the CD22 out in the cockpit... which I am fascinated with and will be very glad to have aboard if I find myself suddenly in a fog bank. But my main nav tool is the plastic chart of the area I hold in my hand in the cockpit, or nearby. And a very cool Plastimo hand bearing compass which is unbelievably accurate. I agree, the time you need to know your location is probably when the electronics will fail. Though, even with the amazing electronics, nothing but common, conservative, seamanship will suffice, regardless of the tools available. The example of the Archangel south of Islesboro is a case in point.
