Ref Garmin sales. I occasionally sell the stuff and many boaters will still buy the large plotters (thank God for Searay owners). They like that I set up the plotter and that my whole instruction brief is "switch on plotter, drive on the white, slow down on the blue and stay off the yellow".
Re. not having a dedicated plotter on board. That does not work for me. I will have two of whatever last years 5" screens (Garmin 546 are now in the $600 range). One at the helm and one at the chart table. The chart table one can be moved to the wheel to provide redundancy.
Ref "Skipper App" I downloaded it and it looks great. It got a great write up from the owner of Active Captain. I balked at the $12 per year fee, because;
a. I'm cheap.
b. I am firmly in the camp that most people "rent their lifestyles". I will go to amazing lengths to avoid ANY monthly/annual fee.
