How about a pneumatic cutoff tool?

If you have a compressor (everyone needs one ) you could use a simple cutoff tool. Stick it in the existing slot cut it longer.
Here's one at Harbor Freight for less than $10.00

- I'm old tech and would try to use a drill and metal hack saw blade.
- Use a router, but make a jig so it CAN NOT get out of control
- Router with a guide and a carbide end mill.
- You can get an attachment for a Dremel
