If you want it to look like it was a factory machining job make a jig that you can clamp to the mast and a template to guide the router bit. You want a bit with a top bearing to follow your template. A carbide milling bit would be nice but you won't find one with a bearing to follow your template. All the work is in the jig and template. The actual machining will take a couple of minutes.
