... commissioning and de-commissioning for the season I actually like and look forward to (well, maybe not the putting-away part), and researching & completing projects. But for instance, the other day I pulled my Heat Exchanger as part of Preventive Maintenance to have a look and have it cleaned. The 30 year old Yanmar was working perfectly fine, I baby this engine. The Heat Exchanger and Tube Bundle had not been cleaned in 2000 hours and 10 years, and there was no reason to do so ... other than that thingy in the Manual that says to do so every 1000 hours. During the cleaning process, the folks knocked off a cake of carbon and with it came two holes in the exhaust part of the manifold, rendering the part useless. And while my Bundle is perfectly fine, it does not fit in the new Heat Exchanger / Exhaust Mainfold Yanmar now sells for my engine, so I have to replace that too, they no longer make the old Case and searching for one turned up none. A $2000 part. I'm considering a re-power. Sort of like when the well pump at home goes dead or your septic system has to be replaced. These are the things that are hard to stomach for me ... cheers, John
