That the military shoots thousands of round per kill, and that number had gone up dramatically over time since the 1st world war. With single shot bolt action you had to be a marksman. With automatic weapons just point in the general direction and pull the trigger, and you're likely to do some damage.

My father was an infantry foot solder in WW2 in Europe, he was decorated with 2 bronze and one silver star, 3purple hearts. When I was a kid he told me he worried about the automatic fire, not the guy with a semi-auto rifle who was actually aiming at him. "Most of them were terrible shots".
