Wire wound sensors

Most oil pressure senders are also wire wound resistors and these go bad on occasion. Most engines operate at fairly constant oil pressure, hence the slider wears out one place on the resistor. At lower pressures the gauge works fine, but when you hit the worn spot the gauge goes nuts. Submarines have recently gone to something called LVDT sensors to determine the position of the control surfaces - don't know the technology, but they're non-contacting.
