using a rideing sail during a hurricane might be counter productive. Even in a reletive small named storm the potential exists for it to become a much larger and stronger event. Trying to retrive a riding sail when the wind is 40 or 50 knots would not be possible without risk. By the time the wind reached 150 knots I can assure you that the sail would be long gone and not an issue. The next issue is not weather you would still be anchored or if the sail had contributed to your premature departure. The question would be which beach or rock you ended up on. Actually, I could bet money that anyone anchored in anything more then 60 knots is hanging on by their fingernails and the heard thins out really quickly after that. Modern anchor or not. 60 knots is about where the radio traffic really starts to get interesting. By the time it reaches 150 knots the radio, well, it's dropped off significantely again. Back to the rideing sail. In any kind of wind while at anchor, the last thing I'm going to want is windage. The idea of dropping an anchor over the side and having it drag around is a interesting one indeed. I think it's one I might give a try. I like that much better then a sail. As always, this is just MHO.
