General routing research before the passage
In Response To: Chart plotting philosophy ()

'Every time we ended up somewhere different from where we started it was a passage'

We lived on the boat so we always planned on the boat but,, if we were going to do a passage whether it was an overnight or a 12 hour day down the ditch we'd plan ahead but only the general stuff like anchorages, danger areas, bridge restrictions , etc. and stop at that. The morning of the passage after the Admiral did the weather thing (weather was king in deciding the day) I'd do the plotting, nothing too exacting except for perhaps a harbor entrance or plotting around places to be avoided placing marks where needed. The rest was open to what felt right at the time and we did no plotting.
