Richard, I do the same thing but use

my pilot charts to select the route and then transfer it my plotter. That way I get the wide angle overview with the wind and current information mixed into the plan as well. Once I enter in the waypoints I zoom way in so as to be able to walk the entire course making sure I'm passing headlands, rocks, reefs, shallows and even markers with enough room. In the case of marks which have a tendency to move around, I enter a minimum approach alarm around them with plenty of warning. Then I try to keep a good watch as well.
