Is the position the same as this? The pictured wheel position seems to forward (not as much as out old Pearson 35, which was very close to the companionway.)

The "modern" approach is to have a self-tailing winch without a cleat. (I was orginally surprised by this, but after 16 years on our J/Boat I found it really isn't a problem.)

The issues for singlehanding are usually multiple: i) Triming the working sails, ii) Furling the jib, iii) Reefing, iv) Dousing the main, v) Docking -- in your case maybe mooring acquisition ;^))), etc.
