the 29 and the 30 where built on the same hull with differnet topsides. The 29 was the "race" version with step down doghouse cabin top, lazerette hatch that moved everthing forward about 2'. The 30 was the cruiser with the cockpit extending all the way aft and a slightly larger cabin, smaller cockpit with better headroom.
Mine was a wheel conversion too. You'll probably don't want to lose the big wheel. The boat requires a lot of helm work and you'll wear yourself out steering with a small wheel. The best solution is to sit in front of the wheel. An autohelm is of limited usefulness because it can't anticipate. The boat is extremly responsive. If there is any following sea the stern wants to kick around. If the helmsman isn't ahead of the event the boat is around in a second. An auto helm just can't react fast enough.
The other PITA about the wheel conversion is the original engine controls forward on the port side. Perfect to a tiller, useless with the wheel.
Really nice litttle boat, built like a tank. We took it from Annapolis up to Cape May a few times, off shore around Mountawk to New Port. Reasonable fast, we took 3 firstplace series cups with white sails on Wednesday nights before we switched up to spinnakker and got our clock cleaned!
Has it had the A-4 replaced?
