Anyone use a winch as a turning block?

I don't see why not. There's no perfect place for any mainsheet, including mine. But I'm moving it permanently from the cabin top to the aft end of the cockpit. There, it will be in the wrong place,...less often.

I've settled on mounting the 2 speed winch from the cabin top to an island(wood or bronze stand like I have, if I can find one) outside the coaming(red box). After the mainsheet leaves the traveler fiddle blocks, it will lead down to a block at deck level - behind the traveler track. That block will turn the mainsheet toward the new winch location.

From the new winch location, it will simply lead forward to a cleat on the outside of the coaming(that's already there). Most of the time, I'm sailing next to the wheel. Both the sheet winch and the mainsheet winch will be easy to reach without moving(if I'm seated on the port side). Never the case with the mainsheet on the cabin top, I always have to move forward(and stand usually).

BUT, I sail quite a bit(AP steering) out of the weather inside the dodger(CP, AP head forward in companionway). Why not take one turn around the new sheet winch(red) and go forward the secondary winch(rarely used) - then to a cleat forward of that?

Easy to reach from the bridge deck(out of spray, rain, wind). With three wraps on the secondary, the sheet should simply turn the mainsheet winch - as I crank the secondary, in either speed. And with only one wrap, the sheet should easily slip on the mainsheet drum as I let it off. Agree?

Further, why no take that same single wrap on the mainsheet winch, and go -diagonally across on port tack- to the other secondary in those times I'm sailing alone and under the dodger with AP steering?
