Is there such a thing as a scarfed lap joint?

lap joints are never very good looking anyway but by scarfing a very long lap joint it would look better and perhaps be less likely to give you a problem in the future. 1/4 x 1 inch is pretty small stuff.
But then,,,, I don't know much about woodworking so I'm flying blind.
