First off, it's usually not an option: nowadays most yards say mast down. period. In some cases, this is because of local ordinances.

Where it's an option, it's a pretty big extra expense - even after they charge you extra for the extra jackstands that they say
you have to have if you keep the mast standing, it's a big price difference.

You also have to have confidence that the yard will put things back the right way in the Spring. With some yards that's not a good bet.
