I store mast-up but believe your club is right (is better down)

() The down-side is it takes more labor, expense and storage space to store mast-down. You get a chance to inspect the rig better and work all the parts, and do any masthead maintenance. You also get to screw up your rig tuning and fix something that ain't broke.
