For my similar situation, I used leather covers. Available at WM for about $8 Then you spend the time sewing them on. Seem to work well.

Have to admit that it is somewhat curious that a boat has such a sharp edge at such a critical location... one might think that it would be rounded, vice a sharp 90. I noticed my mooring lines getting a deep V right where they went over that edge.
