Philip Rhodes boats are growing on me.

He's right. My main boom has what looks to be 30 years of varnish on it.
What varnish do you use? What ratio of Penetrol?
Between 5 to 10%

Truth is, I could not keep varnish on my last boat Jon.
If you do that, don't use polycarbonate -- it gets cloudy from UV
Use polycarbonate, but use the right grade...
FYI -- I was told the UV-resistant polycarbonate doesn't hold up well if you bend it
