Thanks for ideas earlier from Jon Eisberg and others. We looked at every conceivable scheme but ended up with a bit of this, a bit of that. Thanks to Iain Sommerville (Malo 42 "Bizim") for the idea of hinging skinny panels together and lashing them on deck.
There are six panels totalling 390 watts (nominal). We decided we did not want anything up in the air, on an arch, over the cockpit. That means when we sail the boat, we can fold up the cockpit cover/bimini and have clear vision all around.
As you can see from the photo, shading can be a problem. Having lots of panels gives us some luxury of not having all panels producing. Since they are wired in parallel, a partially shaded panel only negates output from that one panel.
We have to be careful not to step on a panel or drop anything on it. So far so good. Most of our mainsail handling work is done on the port side. The panels rest on carved foam blocks which are independently secured to the boat. This arrangement was fine on our trip down the coast. We might take panels below if we expected a really nasty situation.
