I was pretty careful about sizing the wire to have less than a 3% voltage drop at maximum output. I did not allow for losses at the various wire junctions in the system, but oversized the wire on the main trunk to the solar controller. I sized each segment for the max amperage expected to go through it. This website was handy for estimating voltage losses:

I was surprised how big the wires needed to be! Partly that's because the routing tends not to be very direct in the real world of boats.

As for hanging outboard... hmmmm... Perhaps there's a new job for the spinnaker pole or a halyard!
