For several years we were involved in the Big Brother and Big Sister program. Our little (as their refered to) was bright and had a good healthy outlook. As she graduated HS and was going to college on scholarships you could see the strain she was under. It was so much like watching a swimmer in a group of drowning individuals. All her family who were not nearly as fortunate nor driven as she was latched on to her hoping she could pull them out of their life. I don't know where she is now. I hope she's doing ok. Last I knew she had dropped out of college and was a waitress.
I don't believe poverty nor do I believe wealth is totally earned; oh maybe a couple of percent but that's about it. Wealth has so much to do with luck and birth; poverty is the same. Being born in the US is IMHO one great advantage. I never earned that. Just a happy accident.
