Parents routinely outlived kids not all that long ago. 
For a kid to live past five was to have beaten odds on disease, etc. Kids are so expendable in some poorer parts of the world they can be bought and sold cheaply, infanticide especially of girls is still practiced, etc. It's only in the last hunnerd years more or less that we think we shouldn't outlive a child.
