I do believe that the purpose of the large diameter wheel is to enable the helmsman to get outboard to see the telltales on the headsail. we use to have an eight foot hiking stick on our C&C 30, the helmsman was the 3rd guy forward in the rail line up. he had a clear view of the sails and what was in frot of us.
