Hi Jon

Good observation, the big wheel does add a significant obstacle, and a difficult one if you have to actually step on the deck to get around (as appears from the photo). I have a big wheel too which is difficult to get around, but at least you can step around it with your feet on the floor, and I have fairly high combings all around.

All that said, offshore boats have strong points so you can clip on before leaving the companionway, and work your way anywhere you need to go (on a short leash with a dual-clip harness). I wish I could say I always clipped in before stepping out of the companionway in heavy weather, but I can't. Ned's loss has given me a lot of pause to reflect; if it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone.

The other folks on the boat were extremely experienced. I don't know why they couldn't easily rig the backup steering but I'm quite sure we will learn.

A very sad event indeed,

Max
