True enough. Perhaps most useful for steering by the wind, not the destination.

Very sad news - Ned Cabot was lost off Newfoundland this weekend...
Sad news indeed... going out in gale winds as a matter of course
That's very sad and sobering
From the initial report, a couple of thoughts...
At first I thought "That can't be right"...
Is that an oversized wheel?

Very good points, to be sure...
Another steering backup on some boats...
There is going to be change on that paradigm
I'm thinking...
And another approach
I think that the force necessary to exert on the shaft is too great -- that's what the blocks are necessary for.
Length = leverage...
Yes, but to use it you'd be standing on the stern...which is not were, saddly, it might be safe in such conditions.
Steering Cables

If you're not clipped-on...and get really knocked-down
Agree with Jon
I can't help but agree with your point about having a tiller on a small boat.
Hate to read that. I was following a boat with one of those destroyer wheels yesterday.
Large wheels
Exactly. Our short PO had added one making the hop necessary.
That makes sense. Thanks.
The reasons..
another reason..
Was very saddened to hear this
