Why does the emergency tiller need to be in-line with the rudder like a conventional tiller. Why not at a right angle?
My boat, like many, has very little room between the rudder post and the wheel. To get a longer tiller in there, why not just turn it 90 degrees. A lot of swing room then for a longer tiller.
My emergency tiller is a round aluminum pipe with slots that fit over a bolt on the rudder post. To change it all that needs to be done is mill a couple more slots. Then carry a tiller extension to fit into the tiller pipe.
