Another steering backup on some boats...

I hope I never have to use our emergency tiller in.. well.. an emergency. It requires having a flap on the lazarette hatch partially open and the tiller is very short.

We do have a couple other options. if the Jeffa steering system fails. The autopilot ram drives the quadrant directly and could be an immediate backup if that system is functional. I'd attempt to use that before setting up the emergency tiller on our boat, especially in rowdy conditions. The Hydrovane also can serve as an emergency rudder but all bets would be off if the main rudder was stuck to the side or completely free.

What a nightmare to deal with in a hurry. I didn't know Ned Cabot but know several of his friends. Very sad.
