Yup, most boats I get on, the emergency tillers are pretty pathetic, and it's not too hard to imagine the difficulty one might have fitting one on a rudderpost in constant movement...

And yes, assuming the 3rd crew was below at the time, simply maintaining visual contact with the MOB in such conditions would have been EXTREMELY difficult...

More than any event in recent memory, this one reinforces for me the axiom that falling off the boat is simply not an option... Even with the most experienced and capable of crews, the chances of survival are very slim... And, if it should occur at night, fuggeddaboudit....
