Sounds familiar.

I also had a grounding fault about 10 years ago. Ground cable between the engine and the start battery went bad, and alternator current ground leg was then out through the the shaft and propeller, to the keel, and then into the bonding system. When the boat was hauled, the 12" propeller was down to 9.5"! Installed a new ground cable, one of those drive saver isolators, and a new plastic propeller from CDI.
