"unfamiliar marinas, usually in the dark"?
Most of us try to avoid that situation. If I were to come in after dark, and after the staff has gone, I'd either anchor out or be looking for an open fuel dock or outer facing dock. There are few marinas I'd feel comfortable entering without knowing which slip was open, currents, depths, etc. Local knowledge is key. No contact with staff via VHF means (for me) that I wouldn't even consider looking for a inner slip.
Also, I rarely would even consider the idea of burying my face in a computer screen online when underway at night. Preserving night vision AND keeping watch
is vital at such times.
