When you consider AC is driven by the sale of electronic navigation. I'm not saying this as one who is totally opposed to electronics and their use for navigation. I have several Garmin pieces and use them all the time, but as supplements to old fashioned navigation.
I do route planning on them as well as various calculations, but they are in reality just one more tool in my tool kit. For planning purposes I find that seeing the whole picture very helpful, also scanning the intended passage for any hazards I may encounter. All of this is also influenced with knowledge of how old the actual hydrographic date is and that in many areas it has changed. I don't know about other chart plotter manufacturers, but Garmin really irritates me with their inference that they are better than other chart presentations. The best example is the use of decimal depths in less than 10 feet. Ever notice that 9 is shown as 8.9 and so forth. Add in that while the GPS is good within a few feet, the correlation to the chart may be off quite a bit.
What the Hell, everybody knows electronics and computers never give bad info. I freely admit the information provided it good, but to blindly follow the "boat symbol"???????? No mater what we are using it still needs to be filtered through a reasonable brain and one must make full use of their eyes.
