And just like the argument that "chart plotters increase accidents" that I disagree with, I don't agree with this AC argument either.

He makes good points in that most charts are out of date, and on more and more boats, they've become back up tools. But dangerous?

If you fear your boat has a good chance of losing all electronics, then paper charts, even grossly outdated will be a valuable back up tool.

With no electronics, you're reduced to Dedreckoning(thanks) in which case any old chart is likely to be a big help getting you home. Even though more and more boats will become less likely to lose all electronics in the future, some will always navigate safely on paper charts.

There's no need to charge them with doing so unsafely.
