Use the info that's available.
I remember doing overnight races in years past when all we had was RDF fixes. Take a few fixes, plot them on the 12xx chart, then set your coffee mug inside the triangle - that's where you were.
Remember coming back from Bermuda in mid 70s.. This boat had Loran - turn the dials to align the peaks on the CRT display - that was one TD. Reset the receiver and do it again for another TD. Finally, plot those on a chart with Loran overlay. Used RDF to home in on Montauk.
Today with GPS, you know where you are. Question now is - where are you going and what's in the way.
