Photo of Passage similarly back in the day.

The staysail was added by me when I extended the bow onto a sprit to help compensate for weather helm in the higher winds of the lower Columbia region. Anemometer on boat taking photo registered 35 mph winds coming over Tongue Point, no fetch to speak of but breaking out of the wind shadow into the river the waves were steep, short, and five to six feet.

I coulda used that removeable, furling stay thingy as in light airs with a 135 it was slow tacking.
