A couple of times I sailed staysail only in winds measured by the coasties at 50 mph coming out of Young's Bay and was balanced perfectly and under control. When you have no motor and get caught out in a williwaw you gotta be ready. The williwaws that happened occasionally out of the bay typically didn't last long enough to build seas so it made exhilarating sailing. Once spent half a night on Desdemona Sands in a Catalina 30 that got broadsided next to the sands at a race start and blown sideways up onto the sands. Coasties would call every hour to see how we were doing and aside from having a new slant on life, no problems.
