The tube is definitely welded to the base plate. I wish they were as you described, I would have removed them for the winter.

I also tried a few times to straighten them in place. If I could correct the fore/aft bend I would be happy. I need to get back down to the boat when the weather cooperates. Cold and rainy is not the right time to sit and contemplate my next move.
