The residential decking industry touts Ipe for it's lack of splintering.

I wondered about that too so did some research.

In the working stage though, I give it pretty high splinter danger. About the same as Fir but maybe not quite as bad as Oak or Southern yellow pine. It is so dense it leaves a razor sharp edge after cutting. And along that edge are splinters! But I think my hands are anti splinter trained after so many years. Yeah, I still get a few but you learn not to grab most hardwood boards and many types of plywood(which can be the worst splinter accidents on construction sites).

I agree with the industry opinion that Ipe is a good surface untreated, for even bare feet. The reason being the material is so dense that the surface, after sanding and then continued use, will be extremely hard and smooth. My main worry is checking so I'm hopeful that my small planks(and not too large margins) will take care of that worry.

Once the whole surface is sanded, I'll moon walk on it in bare feet, and post the video, Dave.
